In August of 2009 the Mexican federal government legalized the possession of small amounts of certain "recreational" drugs.




However, you will still be detained if a law enforcement official sees you using or possessing drugs.

And to be clear, we are not condoning drug use - this is for informational purposes only.

The Mexican law may have been well intended but it wasn't well written. For example, although it is legal to possess drugs for personal use, it is still illegal to sell them.

Also, anyone found to be in possession of drugs must go before a judge. The process is to confirm that the person did not have the drugs for the purpose of distribution, and to refer the person to drug counseling. Read more.
